Cornerstone marked a pivotal moment when Styx boldly shifted from their progressive rock roots toward a more accessible, radio-friendly sound that would define their massive commercial success in the early 80s. This 1979 release spawned “Babe,” their first number-one hit, which Dennis DeYoung wrote as a heartfelt ballad for his wife though many band members initially resisted its pop sensibilities. The album perfectly captures that fascinating tension between their symphonic prog tendencies and the emerging arena rock sound that bands were chasing at the decade’s end.
