Here’s a pressing that doesn’t surface often, and when it does, serious blues collectors take notice. Dutch Mason’s “Special Brew” on Attic from 1980 captures the Halifax harmonica master at a pivotal moment in his career, just as he was gaining recognition beyond the Maritimes club circuit where he’d been honing his craft for over a decade. Mason had already earned his stripes backing touring American blues legends who passed through Nova Scotia, and this album showcases the deep, authentic blues sensibility he developed during those formative years. The recording quality is surprisingly rich for a Canadian independent release of this era, with Mason’s harmonica work sitting perfectly in the mix alongside some truly solid guitar playing.
